The port was established in 1957 by the Ministry of Transport, and relocated to its present location in 1965. In February 2005 Eilat Port began operating as an independent government owned company, after implementation of the structural change in the port sector and the dismantling of the Ports Authority. At the beginning of 2013 the privatization of the Eilat Port Company was completed by the Companies Authority and the concession for operation was awarded to Papo Shipping who won the tender for operation of the port.
